Lab Mission
To improve human well-being and alleviate suffering using effective, precise, and accessible psychological interventions grounded in a science of human behavior.
Effective & Replicable
We develop and evaluate personalized interventions informed by data and psychological theories, especially behavioral principles. Our goal is to define effective treatments and their underlying principles so that positive effects can be replicated in different contexts and for specific people.
In addition, we want treatment to be effective for the particular people it will be delivered to—not just on average. Thus, we use idiographic and idionomic (or idiothetic) methods to determine how our research applies to particular individuals and coherent subgroups.
Precise
We identify how treatments work and how to deliver them precisely—matched to a person in a specific context at a given time. Thus, we study how to streamline effective treatments to minimize redundancy and use resources judiciously.
Accessible & Scalable
Effective treatments are limited in utility if they cannot be implemented in communities that need them or at scale. As such, treatments must be accessible to practicing clinicians and the communities they serve and scalable to meet the high need for mental health services.
We also strive to integrate cultural responsiveness into intervention development, so that interventions are designed for diverse groups from the outset.
Big Questions
How do we personalize treatment effectively and precisely?
How do we make effective treatments easy to learn to increase adoption by practicing clinicians?
How do we make personalized treatment replicable and relevant to marginalized and underserved groups?
How do we leverage large language models (LLMs) to increase scalability of treatment personalization?
